From an office a few blocks from John Wayne Airport, Busch, 69, has helped steer this small but powerful faction of Trump-aligned Republicans through a nonprofit he created, the Napa Institute, to rally conservative Catholics. They distrust Francis’ approach to LGBTQ+ people and the divorced, and bristle at how he has framed liberal priorities like climate change and economic inequality as “pro-life” issues on the level of abortion. We've spent the last 35 years working alongside our clients to put into place housing and support services that meet their needs and empower them to move forward with their lives.

We serve the residents of historic Peoplestown and the surrounding neighborhoods of south Atlanta.

Later key parts of what Viganò alleged were proved false or unrelated to the current pope. The archbishop went on to make increasingly bizarre statements that led even conservatives to label him an unreliable conspiracy theorist. Among rank-and-file American Catholics, Francis is enormously popular as he enters the second decade of his papacy, with 84% of weekly Massgoers holding a favorable opinion of him. But as he nudges the global church left, an elite group of U.S. conservatives led by Busch is trying to pull the American church right. The Lokey Help Center provides access to a variety of community services, all under one roof, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance, Georgia ID assistance, disability insurance applications, and more.

Empowering children, youth, and adults to overcome challenges and equipping leaders to change the system.

The problem is it’s hard to live without support, which makes them feel frustrated, excluded, and powerless. We believe everyone deserves the resources needed to live independently. Our ultimate goal is to defeat homelessness by providing safe and stable housing to all of our clients. Our staff work tirelessly to place our clients into affordable apartments that will allow them to rebuild their lives. Emmaus House supports academic achievement and youth development by engaging children, youth, and parents through multigeneration academic and personal support, culturally relevant programming, leadership development, and community organizing.

Letters to the Editor: What would Jesus say to a rich, anti-’woke’ Catholic activist?

The center provided both the space for meeting at their headquarters and transportation to and from those meetings for residents. The sex abuse scandals had cost bishops and clergy the respect of the community, and the attendant payouts to victims made for ruinous balance sheets. Yet here was a layman using his own money to open shiny new schools that quickly filled with a new generation of Catholics, albeit largely rich ones. In the years that followed, Emmaus House became the wellspring of a distinctive Black Power-inflected grassroots social and economic justice activism shaped strongly by the feminist politics of local poor and working class black women. No one did more to define that activism than Ethel Mae Matthews, a local black mother and welfare recipient who, over three decades from the late 1960s onward, became one of the most committed and important advocates for social and economic justice in Atlanta.

A Journey with Christ

Contrary to dominant declensional narratives of the 1960s and 1970s black freedom struggle, Matthews and her fellow activists at Emmaus House vigorously continued to fight race and gender inequality in the city and state in the decades that followed. When Matthews passed away in 2005 at the age of 72, one writer remembered her as “a loud and persistent voice for the poor, the elderly and children. Busch was doing well financially with a successful estate-planning practice serving high net worth individuals, as well as an ownership stake in the family supermarkets. But rather than handing a check to the diocese to upgrade the existing schools, he and other people of means built a new Catholic school independent of church control. Youth on the Move, an out-of-school time program, prepares middle and high school students for success as adults through enrichment, education, empowering experiences, and peer support. But others said American Catholics will notice the rightward tilt of their church if they haven’t already.

There are also more than 130 Masses, dozens of opportunities for confession, spiritual talks and speeches by conservative theologians and stars of the political right, such as Lindsey Graham, Mike Pence and Bill Barr. As their children grew, Busch and other parents returned to the same model to open JSerra High in 2003 in San Juan Capistrano. Both schools remain sought after for South Orange County families at a time when some Catholic schools struggle. JSerra, a sports powerhouse with an impressive 37-acre campus, attracted 800 applicants for 375 seats in its freshman class this year.

The school board responded with a new school desegregation plan that included a deliberately unpublicized provision. If a minimum of thirty children signed up for transfer and their parents arranged their transportation, students in schools where they were in a majority could apply for transfers to schools where they would be in a minority. The organizational burden this provision placed on parents was specifically designed to deter poor and working-class black Atlantans from taking advantage of it. Emmaus House also ran numerous programs to support the local community, including a food cooperative for several years in the early 1970s. It also offered free baby feeding and food surplus programs, not dissimilar to the “community survival” programs run by the Black Panther Party.

The most direct attack on Pope Francis by American conservatives came in 2018 — with Busch playing a key role. “Like sending my kids to a prison,” Busch recalled in a 2014 interview. Busch admits that he has never taken a single course in theology or philosophy.

Foundational to the work and mission of Emmaus House is listening to and learning from community members.

We offer educational  and social enrichment programs during the week, on Saturdays, and during the summer for children, youth, and adults. We also provide case management and emergency stabilization services for adults. We seek to address the systemic challenges that confront people of color and those who live in poverty. Ethel Mae Matthews and Emmaus House also fought to improve local black children’s education, pioneering a community struggle to integrate the city’s schools. Following the Brown decision in May 1954, Atlanta’s white-controlled school board dedicated itself to minimizing the ruling’s impact on the racial makeup of the city’s public schools. In October 1969, the Supreme Court’s decision in Alexander v. Holmes forced the Board of Education to adapt its policy once more.

The Emmaus House Food Pantry is a client choice food pantry that is open to residents of the zip code every Tuesday and Thursday by appointment. Our commitment to relationship and results calls us to interact with the people we serve both as people in need who deserve excellent services and as teachers with profound expertise on the very issues we are working with them to solve. Emmaus House seeks transformation in the lives of individuals, within communities, and in the systems that shape our lives. To achieve this change, we believe that as an organization we must focus on both relationship and results. Emmaus House works to improve the economic and social well-being of the residents of Peoplestown and surrounding neighborhoods.

Of these, 28 families live together in a congregate setting at 150 How Street in Haverhill. Families live with dignity and respect in their own suites and join together for meals, meetings, and group activities in the spacious common area located on the first floor. The family shelter program also serves 26 families in scattered site apartments located in the same Haverhill neighborhood. Emmaus House’s 50th anniversary gala featured a history walk, where 30 posters lined the Carter Center’s beautiful reflecting pool, an apt place for people to read and reflect on Emmaus House, the Peoplestown community, and the civil rights movement in Atlanta. As Emmaus House marks its half centenary, it is celebrating fifty years of remarkable activism.

Go to the same priest for confession every time for increased accountability, he told the group. Bring a notebook to Eucharistic adoration so you can record what you hear from God. In the years that followed, he continued attacking gay marriage publicly, even acknowledging that in the modern era it made him “a bigot” in the eyes of many.

Ryan won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting with colleagues Matt Hamilton and Paul Pringle in 2019. She and Hamilton won the Collier Prize for State Government Accountability in 2023. On a fall Friday just before noon, about a dozen people gathered for Mass at the chapel in Busch’s law firm. Mounted on one side of the altar was a large painting of Francis’ predecessor, Pope Benedict. After a decade in power — longer than many had expected — the 87-year-old Francis has named most of the cardinals who will pick his replacement. Koch’s political network announced last month that it is supporting Nikki Haley, not Trump, in the GOP primary.

He has referred to same-sex intimacy as sinful and refused to allow gay marriage in the church. He has not permitted women to become priests or divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion. But for a period of time, the letter represented a serious attack on Francis’ papacy.

The hospitality industry, where he made much of the money he used for his Catholic causes, embraced gay people. His hotels host LGBQT+ groups for parties and same-sex weddings, and his employees included many openly gay people. His vision was for a “Catholic Bohemian Grove,” a reference to the secretive annual summer gathering of powerful men in Sonoma, or a church version of the Aspen Institute. At the time, reliably conservative Benedict XVI was pope, but Busch was alarmed by the drift toward secularism in America, even among his Catholic friends. The institute has an office in the nation’s capital, and Busch is also a key player at Catholic University there. In 2016, his family gave $15 million, the largest donation in university history, to fund what is now known as the Busch School of Business.

Catholics connected to Busch proved instrumental in Republican rollbacks of abortion access. Donald Trump delegated the vetting of Supreme Court appointees to Leonard Leo, the Federalist Society co-chair who sits on the board of an organization that funds Napa Institute programs and whom Busch has publicly lauded as a daily-Mass-attending Catholic. Two justices recommended by Leo were devout Catholics and the third was raised in the faith. The Focus of Emmaus is God as known in Jesus Christ and how that finds expression in the local church.
